Longan fruit

Last month, on the way to the north, we saw a fruit vendor on the side of the road who sold some longans!

I hadn’t eaten any this season!! Longan season is usually around end of January, February and March. I think they were scarce this year because of the lack of water due to the drought we suffered throughout the whole year.

Longans is one of my favorite fruit! And yes I know, there is this BIG dispute here in Mauritius about whether lychees or longans are better… and I know that the former is juicier and bigger and there is more flesh, etc, etc… but I still do prefer longans!!!

So, we stopped and bought some. Yeah!!

Needless to say, as soon as we arrived, I sat and started eating them one by one!

They were the most incredible longans. They were no bigger than the usual ones… but the seeds inside were really tiny, and that’s quite unusual for them.

I enjoyed them tremendously! And yes, in case you are wondering, I did share… some!

How about you? Have you ever tasted the longan fruit? Which one do you prefer: longans or lychees? Share with us in the comments below!

    1. Hi Amlesh,
Longan plants can be bought at various nurseries throughout the island like the one in Gros Cailloux ‘Ma jardinerie’, the nursery of Labourdonnais or Exotica nursery in Petit Raffray. Some smaller plant vendors might also have them.
